Updated October 17: Added Trillium College’s October 16 instructional pause; original publication date retained.
ONTARIO — Trillium College stopped classroom and online teaching on Friday, October 16, according to a student notice obtained and confirmed by The Canadian Press. The October 17 report describes a temporary academic pause following Ontario’s freeze on OSAP payments to private postsecondary institutions.
The college told students it had offered interest-free payment arrangements, but many could not pay without OSAP. It said the interruption would allow changes to schedules, staffing and its return-to-class plan, CP reported.
CP also reports that Trillium’s campuses were not among the six denied OSAP eligibility earlier this year. The temporary teaching pause should not be confused with a permanent closure or a finding of wrongdoing.
The funding decision behind the disruption
In its October 6 statement, Ontario said it had halted private-institution OSAP payments while KPMG examined the system. The ministry cited preliminary concerns about student validation, enrolment and application patterns, and said it had referred the matter to the OPP and notified the Auditor General. Those are government concerns and referrals, not criminal findings.
The statement promised stricter eligibility requirements and proposed legislation excluding predominantly online career-college programs. It also described discussions about low-interest third-party student loans, rather than an available replacement program with a stated launch date. These proposed loans are separate from the payment arrangements Trillium described.
Students’ access to support remains central
Career Colleges Ontario’s October 7 response called for immediate protection of students already attending approved in-person programs. The association supported investigating suspected abuse but urged a targeted approach and restoration of funding for affected compliant students. That is the association’s position, not an announced change in government policy.
Trillium’s own website lists locations in Niagara, Oshawa, Kingston, Sudbury and Cobourg. Students need institution-specific information about affected programs, payment options and a confirmed return date; Ontario’s sector-wide funding decision alone does not answer those questions.
