North Korea says it tested a new underwater torpedo system on October 15, with state media claiming artificial intelligence is used to find and guide the weapon toward targets.
Reuters reported the announcement from the Korean Central News Agency on October 17, Korea time. That announcement date is separate from the Thursday test date; the Reuters report carried by NDTV was published on Friday evening in Toronto.
Capability claims remain unverified
KCNA described improved propulsion and said the technology followed more than 180 tests over five years, according to Reuters. Those are North Korean government claims. The Northern Current has not independently verified the weapon’s performance or how its AI system works.
The report follows a separate North Korean announcement about submarine-launched cruise-missile tests on October 14. Neither announcement, on its own, establishes operational deployment of the newly described torpedo.
Canadian policy context
Canada has an established role in efforts to enforce sanctions against North Korea. In a May 29, 2026 joint statement, Canada and partner governments called for stronger action on maritime sanctions evasion, citing vessel imagery and voyage analysis.
That statement predates this torpedo report and is background, not a Canadian response to the test. The sources reviewed do not establish that the weapon poses a specific new threat to Canadian personnel.
