KOLKATA — Nineteen people died and 25 were injured in a crowd crush during Durga Puja celebrations in north Kolkata on Saturday, October 17, according to the official account reported by India's public broadcaster Akashvani on Sunday.

The broadcaster places the incident at the Chorbagan festival pavilion at about 8 p.m. local time. The Associated Press separately reports the same casualty figures, citing West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Inquiry into the rush

Accounts from Akashvani and AP describe rain and a sudden movement of people around the venue. Authorities announced an investigation headed by a judge. Those early accounts do not establish a final cause or legal responsibility.

Akashvani reports that investigators are examining camera footage and that the pavilion was closed for forensic work. The Sunday death toll supersedes the provisional count of 17 in earlier reporting; it should not be read as a separate incident.

Assistance announced

India's Prime Minister's Office confirmed an assistance announcement in an October 17 statement issued through the Press Information Bureau. It provides for 200,000 rupees from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for each bereaved family and 50,000 rupees for injured people.

These are announced payments, not confirmation that families have received them. TNC has not independently verified the identities or nationalities of the victims.
