HAMILTON — Ontario and the federal government have announced more than $203,000 in training support for steel and manufacturing workers in the Hamilton area as U.S. tariffs put pressure on local industry.
The October 6 announcement says 75 workers and jobseekers will receive help to upgrade their skills and move into occupations where employers need staff.
The allocation comes through the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response. The governments describe that wider initiative as a $228.8-million program supporting training and employment services for up to 27,000 workers across Ontario.
For Hamilton, the announcement offers a workforce-support measure during a period of uncertainty in steel production. It does not announce a cancellation of Stelco layoffs or resolve the separate dispute over the company’s takeover commitments.
The stated number is the program’s intended reach, rather than a count of people who have already completed training. Workers should consult the government’s announcement and Employment Ontario for current program information.
